Full time (36.5 hours per week) Fixed term contract for 36 months.
We are seeking to recruit a postdoctoral research fellow in the area of computational pathology to work on developing cutting-edge algorithms in the domain of computational pathology for AI based profiling of digitized histology slides of head and neck cancers.

You will be expected to perform high quality research under the supervision of Professor Nasir Rajpoot and work as part of the ANTICIPATE project on early detection of oral cancer, funded by Cancer Research UK and in close collaboration with Dr Ali Khurram at the University of Sheffield. The expectation is that you will produce breakthrough research results on sophisticated tools for deep learning and computational pathology, publish these results in top rated venues, and assist with the deployment of those tools for validation on the trial data.

Suitable candidates will have at least a 2.1 Honours degree and a PhD (or equivalent experience / qualification) in Computer Science or a closely related discipline and the experience to initiate and perform research in line with the identified requirements of the project lead. You will have a strong background in one or more of the following: deep learning; computational pathology; medical imaging; computer vision; and machine learning.
The role is based at the University of Warwick, Coventry, although the ability to travel to other partners in the consortium may be required.

If you have not yet been awarded your PhD but are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant on level 5 of the University grade structure (£30,046). Upon successful award of your PhD and evidence of this fact, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure (£30,942 pa).

Full details of the duties and selection criteria for this role can be found in the vacancy advert on the University of Warwick’s jobs pages. You will be routed to this when you click on the Apply button.

Fixed term contract until 31 December 2021, 36.5 hours per week.

As a Data Scientist, you will work as part of the PathLAKE (Pathology image data Lake for Analytics, Knowledge and Education) team based in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick on developing cutting-edge AI solutions for early diagnosis and/or personalised treatment of cancer. PathLAKE is a consortium of nationally leading experts in digital and computational pathology – coordinated by the University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire and with the University of Warwick being one of the academic partners alongside other academic partners, NHS, Royal Philips, Nvidia and other industrial partners around the UK. The consortium has received over £15m funding from Innovate UK and industrial partners to build a world-class image data repository and develop AI tools to improve diagnosis and deliver precision treatments.

You will work with a team of researchers, software engineers and academics at Warwick, led by Prof Nasir Rajpoot, in order to build a large multi-purpose pathology image data lake and develop novel AI tools for computer-aided testing of pathology samples and to identify accurate predictive response markers. As a Data Scientist on the project, you will work on the development of PathLAKE Analytics Engine offering cutting-edge, massively parallelisable, industry-grade deep learning based solutions for computer-aided analysis of large clinical databases of multi-gigapixel pathology images and for predicting response to specific therapies for cancer patients. You will also be expected to contribute to the building and operation of the PathLAKE Data Lake as well as to the development of the AI solutions for regulatory approvals and deployment into a clinical setting.

Suitable candidates will have at least a 2.1 Honours degree and a Masters/PhD (or equivalent experience / qualification) in Computer Science or a closely related discipline and preferably industry experience in professional software development in data analysis. You will have a strong background and experience in one or more of the following preferably with application to clinical data: deep/machine learning; large-scale data analysis; scalable statistical techniques; predictive analytics; data mining; and big data management.
