PhD Student Transport behaviour of strongly sorbing radioelements

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health.

By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2100 people.

For the Diffusion Processes Group of the Laboratory for Waste Management we are looking for a

PhD Student

Transport behaviour of strongly sorbing radioelements

Your tasks

You will work on the fundamental understanding of the transport behaviour of strongly sorbing radioelements in the confined pore network of compacted clay minerals within the European Joint Program Eurad.

For your investigations you will apply different experimental approaches comprising the design and execution of macroscopic radionuclide diffusion experiments with representative clay mineral model systems. These tests will be accompanied by synchrotron based X-Ray microscopic or spectroscopic investigations in order to assess the binding states of the radioelements.

The aim is to correlate the macroscopic transport properties of the cations with the observed structural characteristics. The results will help to discriminate on a fundamental point of level between different processes seen as a possible reason for enhanced cation diffusion rates. Your working location will be at PSI, however, you will possibly also travel to other synchrotron facilities for the X-Ray based measurements. You will communicate your scientific results in peer-reviewed journals, workshops and conferences.

Your profile

You are a highly-motivated individual with good communication skills and easily adaptable to different working environments. You hold a Master degree/Diploma in chemistry, earth or environmental sciences or related field. Welcome assets include experience in chemical and analytical laboratory work and handling of radionuclides.

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.

For further information please contact Dr Luc Robert Van Loon, phone +41 56 310 22 57.

Please submit your application online by 31 July 2019 (including addresses of referees) for the position as a PhD Student (index no. 4404-00).
