“Effects of nanomaterial on aquatic ecosystems”

Nanotechnology is a rapidly growing industrial sector and the development of new nanomaterial-based products provide promising new solutions to many societal challenges. However, the rapid development and use of those novel products also lead to an emerging risk for exposure of nanomaterial to humans and natural ecosystems. Once released into nature, nanomaterials are difficult to detect and characterize and measurements on their amount or specific impact are not trivial. Therefore, rigorous experimental data at semi-natural or natural scale are necessary and in focus of the PhD studies. The project will mainly focus on scaling up studies on nanomaterials from the laboratory to semi-natural experimental wetland systems and by means of bioassays perform behavioral studies on aquatic organisms exposed to different types of nanoparticles. The PhD studies constitute a part of a large, national project on Environmental Nanosafety with the overall aim to improve our understanding of nanomaterials released to natural ecosystems and to provide decision support for future nanosafety regulation.

Required qualifications

A successful applicant has a Master’s degree or similar in Biology or Environmental sciences with specific focus on aquatic ecosystems. The applicant should also have experience and interest in experimental studies, specifically on the transport and toxicology of nanoparticles in aquatic food webs. Previous experiences with studies on nanoparticles, specifically in aquatic systems is a merit. Independence and ability to take initiative are also strong merits, as well as documented ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Eligibility

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
