IMAT test structure
The IMAT exam, unlike the world’s common tests, is paper-based, and the applicant must answer 60 multiple-choice questions with five options in 100 minutes. In terms of content, the IMAT test consists of 4 parts: general knowledge and logical reasoning, biology, chemistry, and mathematics and physics.
The first part, called general knowledge and logical reasoning, assesses the general knowledge and intellectual skills that students need at the highest level to succeed in a course. These skills are the basis of all college education, which often requires solving new problems, understanding the debate to conclude, reinforcing, or defending a point of view. This section contains 22 5-choice questions. Twelve questions are related to general information, and ten questions are related to logical reasoning. General knowledge questions are related to various cultural topics, including literary, historical, philosophical, social, and political. The logical reasoning questions assess the applicant’s intellectual, reasoning, and analytical skills, in particular the ability to follow logical reasoning steps on a variety of topics to identify erroneous reasons in the discussion, problem-solving, and distinguish relevant information from unrelated information.
The second part, consisting of 18 questions, deals with biology, which includes the chemistry of living organisms, cells, the basis of life, bioenergetics, reproduction and heredity, heredity and environment, anatomy, and physiology of animals and humans.
The third section is about chemistry, which deals with topics such as matter composition, atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, basics of inorganic chemistry, chemical and stoichiometric reactions, solutions, oxidation and reduction, acids and bases, and basics of organic chemistry. There are 12 questions in this section.
The fourth section deals with physics and mathematics. In physics, topics such as measurement, kinematics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electrostatics, and electrodynamics are addressed. The mathematics section also deals with topics such as algebra and numerical sets, functions, geometry, statistics, and probabilities. This section has 8 questions.
The total IMAT score (maximum 90 points) will be reported along with the score in each section of logic, general knowledge, biology, chemistry, and physics and mathematics.
The total score of the candidate is determined using the following method:
- 5 points for the correct answer
- -0.4 points for incorrect answers
- 0 points for unanswered questions
