گروه تحقیقاتی مهمانی (Mehmani ) در گروه انرژی و مهندسی مواد معدنی در دانشگاه ایالتی پنسیلوانیا برای دانشجویان دکتری دو فرصت تحصیلی فول فاند در دو زمینه تحقیقاتی زیر ارائه کرده است. یاشار مهمانی در حال حاضر همکار تحقیقاتی در گروه مهندسی منابع انرژی در دانشگاه استنفورد است و در ژانویه 2021 به عنوان استادیار گروه انرژی و مهندسی مواد معدنی به دانشگاه ایالتی پنسیلوانیا می پیوندد.

داوطلبان با سابقه قوی در یک یا چند زمینه از فیزیک محاسباتی (دینامیک سیالات یا مکانیک جامدات)، ریاضیات کاربردی، روش های عددی، برنامه نویسی ، تجزیه و تحلیل تصویر و یادگیری ماشین برای این فرصت تحقیقاتی ارجحیت دارند. داشتن مدرک کارشناسی ارشد یک مزیت است اما یک شرط نیست. دانشجویانی که در زمینه مدل سازی فعالیت می کنند با متخصصان آزمایشگاهی همکاری نزدیک خواهند داشت. دانشجویانی که در زمینه تصویربرداری فعالیت می کنند تجربه کار با ابزارهای پیشرفته را در آزمایشگاه ویژگی مواد کسب می کنند و الگوریتم های یادگیری ماشین را اعمال یا طراحی می کنند.

The Mehmani Research Group has up to two openings for fully-funded PhD students starting January 2021 in the Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering (www.eme.psu.edu) at Penn State University. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to explore either directions listed below:
1) Computational physics of microscale fluid dynamics and solid mechanics
2) Geomaterials characterization through multi-resolution imaging
The lab focuses on the fundamental physics of flow and deformation in porous media. Our goal is to bridge the controlling mechanisms rooted at the microscale to the emergent behaviors observed at the macroscale. A core part of our activities is directed towards devising non-classical algorithms and experimental imaging techniques that probe microscale processes and translate useful insights into Darcy-scale information. Our interests are driven by applications of porous media in energy and the environment. They include subsurface technologies such as CO2 storage, geothermal energy, natural gas, and groundwater remediation, as well as manufactured devices such as fuel cells and batteries. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to questions of global and societal import. Find more information at Mehmani Research Group (http://www.mehmaniresearchgroup.com).
Candidates with a strong background in one or more areas of computational physics (fluid dynamics or solid mechanics), applied mathematics, numerical methods, programming, image analysis, and machine learning are preferred. A master’s degree is a plus but not a requirement. Students engaged in modeling will collaborate closely with experimentalists and contribute new knowledge to theory and algorithms. Students engaged in imaging will gain experience working with state-of-the-art instruments in the Materials Characterization Lab (https://www.mri.psu.edu/materials-characterization-lab) and apply or design machine learning algorithms.

Yashar Mehmani is currently a research associate at the Department of Energy Resources Engineering at Stanford University (https://profiles.stanford.edu/yashar-mehmani) and will join Penn State University in January 2021 as an assistant professor in the Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering. He will also be a co- funded faculty in the Institutes of Energy and the Environment (https://iee.psu.edu), which is committed to interdisciplinary research in matters related to energy and the environment.
